Darts players are having a lively season after Albany hosted the South West Championships on July 3 and 4.

Albany Darts Association secretary Corina Palonis said the annual event was held in a different town each year, affiliated with the South West Championships group.

“This event is primarily for the top average players and always great to watch,” she said.

“This year only 17 teams participated, due to the Perth and surrounding lockdown.”

Bunbury won Division 1 while Division 2 and 3 were won by teams consisting of three Albany players in each.

Three Albany players ended up in the top 10 averages: Darryl Plowman, 70.77, Robbie Woods, 70.36 and Ron Rivett with 69.69.

Doubles winners were local greats Ryan Penn and Darryl Plowman, and Highest Peg in Division 3 was Albany’s Simon Hawkins who pegged a great 123.

The next big event

They are all preparing for the Albany Charity Shield on August 28 and 29.

This is a yearly event the men’s and ladies’ darts associations organise.

“The event raises money for various charitable funds in Albany,” Ms Palonis said.

“Some of our past recipients have been Children’s Cancer Council, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Albany Hospice, Men’s Resource Centre and Albany Disabled Surfers to name a few.

“The weekend of darts is enjoyed by players coming from as far as Esperance, the South West and through to Perth areas.”

Men’s and ladies’ competitions

The event is held annually at Albany PCYC with the men playing in the events room and the ladies playing in the sports area.

“Teams consist of six players, if you are unable to form a team, please come down early and we can generally find a team for you to play in,” Ms Palonis said.

“Any businesses wishing to donate prizes for this event will be greatly appreciated.”
